OVERCAT Game Character Design Work

I have been working as the Executive Artist on what I can safely say has been my favourite project this past year. My focus has been character and key art, designing each cat from the ground up. Inspired by the real-life cat each is based on and their in-game abilities I did my best to capture each personality and give each a chance to shine. This project has been a true test of my character design skills and has allowed me to effectively streamline and speed up my design process without loosing any of the quality.

OVERCAT is a competitive 2d fighting game with cats each with their own unique abilities. Grab a friend, chose your cat as well as your power level and go head-to-head in the ring!

OVERCAT has 17 playable characters that I have carefully designed to show their unique personalities and abilities.

Characters needed to fit within same circle shape, so it was a challenge to keep designs fresh and unique. Checking silhouettes regularly was important.

As I got more comfortable with the style for OVERCAT designing became more streamlined and easier to work with.

With the cast expanding I explored adding accessories and outfits more to allow their personalities to shine even with the same coat colour.

Each cat had multiple sprites, a neutral, happy, hurt and meow as well as a glowing eye version if the eyes were open.

All sprites were complied into a sprite sheet before being implemented into the game.

In an ideal world I would have had time to develop unique weapons but for the sake of time each cat got a unique paw for their colour and an Excalipurr to hold.
